Anna Retulainen is among the first artists announced to be included in the 2027 edition of Helsinki Biennial.
Helsinki Biennial 2027 brings together visionary artists from Finland and around the world in an edition shaped around Unknowns as its conceptual framework. Taking place across Vallisaari Island, Esplanade Park, and HAM Helsinki Art Museum, the fourth Helsinki Biennial unfolds from 6 June to 19 September 2027.
Helsinki Biennial 2027 will present the work of approximately 45 artists and artist groups. Some of the works will be new commissions developed specifically for Helsinki Biennial, and leaving a lasting legacy in the Finnish capital. The full list of artists, detailed programme, and events will be announced in early 2027.
Curated by Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller, Helsinki Biennial 2027 approaches the unknown from perspectives including physical science, astronomy, geology, spirituality, mythology, and abstraction.
Anna Retulainen (b. 1969, Orimattila) is one of the leading figures in Finnish contemporary painting. She has been showing works in solo and group exhibitions since 1995. She has been twice nominated for the Carnegie Art Award, most recently in 2014. In 2018, The Finnish Cultural Foundation's (SKR) Uusimaa Regional Fund awarded Retulainen with its annual 15 000 euro award for outstanding performance, and in the same year, Retulainen's paintings became the first contemporary artworks to be permanently presented at the Finnish Presidential Palace. Retulainen’s work is represented in most of the major Finnish public collections, as well as in countless private collections.
